Why Do I Meditate?

I've been giving this question a lot of thought as my first meditation group for "Road to Sweat-itation" is gearing up. I'm assuming someone will want to know, you know? When I was in high school and college, I was really quick to feel overwhelmed by my emotions. I later learned that that's part of my being an Empath, but I didn't know that then.

I began searching for something, something I hadn't found yet in religion despite having accepted Jesus Christ as my savior. I wasn't angry all the time, I wasn't crying all the time, I wasn't depressed, and yet I felt like emotions were ruling who I was. When I was happy, I was full-on happy. And when I wasn't, whatever I was feeling at the time consumed me to the fullest extent. That overload was what I was looking to control. I realized that my decisions were being made for me by whatever fleeting emotion or feeling I was having at the moment. That led me to making some relatively bad decisions throughout my life. I still battle with this today.

So I dove into zazen, or seated meditation, from what little learning I could glean off the fledgling internet at the time. This was right at the very beginning of Google, before they became the monster they are today. I was able to find passages that had been indexed from people who had studied at monasteries in the East, and that was my foundation. The complete clearing of the mind was the goal and it ISN'T EASY! Millions of years of evolution has trained our minds to constantly run, constantly look for threats, constantly worry, constantly THINK, and FEEL, and SEARCH. That constant work is exhausting! So as I leaned into that practice, days went by...then weeks....then months. And I began to notice something changing within me. I could be in the midst of an energetic exchange, whether it was excitedly talking to a colleague about the weekend plans, a new girl messaging me, or a heated debate about whatever the topic du jour was, and all it took was a deep breath from me and my reactionary responses became whispers in my mind, instead of things coming out of my mouth without thought.

This MOMENT that I had given to myself as a gift through my practice was life changing. I became more level-headed and much better at performing tasks in social situations because I was no longer a slave to the emotional response built in to my mind. Have you ever said something to someone, maybe hurt their feelings? Maybe it was someone you cared deeply for? What would you give to take that feeling that you know they felt, the look on their face painted in pain or anger or disgust or some other woeful response, away from them? This practice was the start of my journey to truly understanding myself and understanding others as well.

Fast forward another lifetime and I became aware of another practice (the one I'm focusing on for the "Road to Sweat-itation") : Mindfulness.

To clarify, I found an article that I think describes mindfulness really well :
"One of the most commonly cited definitions of mindfulness is the awareness that arises through “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 4). Descriptions of mindfulness provided by most other researchers are similar. Baer (2003), for example, defines mindfulness as “the nonjudgmental observation of the ongoing stream of internal and external stimuli as they arise” (p. 125). Though some researchers focus almost exclusively on the attentional aspects of mindfulness (e.g., Brown & Ryan, 2003), most follow the model of Bishop et al. (2004), which proposed that mindfulness encompasses two components: self-regulation of attention, and adoption of a particular orientation towards one's experiences. Self-regulation of attention refers to non-elaborative observation and awareness of sensations, thoughts, or feelings from moment to moment. It requires both the ability to anchor one's attention on what is occurring, and the ability to intentionally switch attention from one aspect of the experience to another. "

Using this definition, I began working on those two components. By realizing that I didn't have to silence my thoughts, but that I could just allow them to exist, notice and acknowledge them, and that they would pass through me without becoming me, I gained yet another layer of understanding of myself and others. I am not every bad thought I have, not the guy who gets upset during snowbird season going to Aldi because someone just cut across 3 lanes of traffic to drive 25 while I'm doing 50(-ish) on 27, even if I do get upset. That's not WHO I AM, it's only who I chose to be in that moment. Every moment I get to decide who I am.

The freedom that comes from understanding that I don't have to raise my voice during a conversation or debate with someone, even if I'm feeling empassioned about the subject matter, or I don't have to allow emotions to overwhelm me even though the feeling of being overwhelmed exists within me, is another game-changing moment for me. Now, as I practice and work through emotions in a gentle, loving, and calm manner, I understand "It makes sense that you would feel some type of way" about whatever is happening, but you don't have to ACT some type of way. The control that affords me has led to many opportunities, including the ability to be here teaching and healing those who choose to learn and be healed.

I'd have been WAY TOO SCARED to start a business with no money, no clients, and no understanding of how it is going to "all work out". But because I was able to analyze and realize that my purpose on this planet is to help and heal people, that is what I am here doing now. I have faith that I will be taken care of and the love I put out into the world will come back and bless me. I'm already so blessed, honestly, that I feel now like I'm trying to catch up!

Saying that to say this, I love the life I lead and meditation is a huge part in that. I want to share it with as many people as possible, and I look forward to sharing it with you reading this!
